With more than 20 years of teaching experience, Katie is a sought after pedagogue, teaching serious students of all levels, from beginner to post conservatory-level. Katie maintains a regular cello class in the North East of England. She is available in-person and online for teaching, coaching (chamber music, audition prep, theory/history) and workshops/clinics/masterclasses including on performance-based mentality, Popper studies, and the core canon of cello repertoire, also including contemporary music and styles.
In 2020, Katie joined the music teaching staff at Durham University (UK), and is Co-Creator of Cello Power: The Popper Project, an interactive online community of cellists with a fun and accessible educational emphasis (featured in The Strad). Katie is also Artistic Director of the Appalachian Chamber Music Festival Strings Camp program in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA. In 2011, Katie was invited to be the cellist of the quartet in Residence at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan, and has led workshops and masterclasses in the US, Europe and Asia with students ages 6 to 80.
Her teaching philosophy draws upon many influences and styles, but she feels especially indebted to her immersion in the school of cello playing of legendary cellist, Janos Starker from her studies at Indiana University.
A graduate of the Sato Center in Cleveland, Ohio, she received a second/double Masters Degree in Suzuki Pedagogy which also informs her teaching style. She has a strong foundation and deep understanding of psychological aspects of performing which is widely incorporated in her work with most students, as is her extensive knowledge of both historical and theoretical aspects of Western music.
